In “Labyrinth”, Lee documented the passing of time and the changes that had occurred over the ten-year period since “Gardens Without Fences”, one of his early portraits of the Hollyhock land, was painted in 1984.
“Labyrinth” features a Hollyhock host doing an early-morning contemplative walk through an oyster-shell labyrinth that was placed by the Lodge for the summer of that year. The painting also shows the Lodge as it was before extensive renovations were completed in 1999.
